Consolidating Your Debt

Debt consolidation loans are a great way to get out of the debt and more debt cycle that many Americans are trapped in. A debt consolidation loan can take the burden off by letting you reorganize your debts into one lower monthly payment. They are lower because most of our debt is in the form of credit cards and the interest on these debts is much higher than on any form of personal loan from any financial institution.

Yes, debt consolidation loans are an effective way to get out of crisis about personal debt, but unless you take positive steps to change your debt, credit, and spending habits, you will soon find yourself back in the same situation, and sooner than you think. Debt consolidation is only a treatment for debt disease, to cure it you need to change your ways.

To do that will mean that you need to take a number of steps. Since you can only minimally control your income you have to focus on what you spend. Start by keeping a daily, weekly, and monthly log of what you purchase and at the end of two months you will finally know where all your money is going. Next, look at all areas of your spending and try to economize or cut back. If you are still short after doing that you will have to eliminate something.

The way to do that is to priorize your spending and plan ahead. Separate things into essential, like to have, and can do without if you have to. Since you have to cut something it might as well be something that you can do without. Another thing to do is to postpone some purchases and see if you can live without them. Remember that the challenge is make your spending fit your income. It may be a tight squeeze but you can do.

Thirdly, reduce the amount of credit available to you and your family by getting rid of all but one or two credit cards. These should be saved for “emergency” purchases, essential things that you can't live without. Never use your credit for frivolous things like music, dining out, or going on vacation. If you want those things then you have to save for them.
